Soundtrack of My Life

This week's tune is from Nine Inch Nails.  It appears on the album "Broken" and is titled "Gave Up".  I find myself listening to this album when I'm especially mad or down on myself.

There ought to be a town somewhere, named for how I feel

Some People...

Ok.  So this past few days has been something of a roller coaster ride.

I spent Friday with a friend that I've made through one of the local groups I attend.  We wound up attending a group meeting last Friday night as well.  I drove her home and was making sure you got in her home ok to find out that her relative had locked her out and placed all her belongings on the front porch.  Along with her possessions was a letter basically saying to go away and never come back.

I know this person.  I've met the relative.  I know the situation.  At no point have I seen any reason for what happened.  Luckily I was able to find her a room with a friend for the week so she at least has a roof over her the next few days.  And she's holding up fairly well considering the situation.

I think what has both shocked and amazed me is that the people you would think would be willing or able to help, didn't.  And those that you think wouldn't or couldn't, did.

My hope is that people know that I'll do everything in my power to help them when they need it most.

Soundtrack of My Life

I haven't posted in a few days.  Mostly because I have a hard time putting my thoughts into words, and putting those words into cohesive sentences.  One constant thing in my life has been my love of music.  And with those two thoughts going through my head, I figured that I'd start a recurring theme about songs that have had some kind of major impact on my life in some way or that I feel can really relate to on some level.  I'll try to do it at least once a week.

The song for this week is "Burning Bright" by Shinedown.

More Drivel

So here is my fourth entry in my blog and I'm already at a point where I don't know what I want to talk about. It's like every day is the same thing, day in and day out.  I do have the activities that I try to force myself to do on a regular basis but I still find them hard to do.  I'm using a dictation app on my phone hoping that maybe just speaking to myself will somehow help in getting ideas out of my head.  I still find myself stuttering over words trying to think of things to say. I think that's commonplace for me here lately.

I live in a fairly large apartment complex here.  I smoke and I find myself wandering outside to smoke a cigarette.  I see people walking by. Cars going by.  Neighbors walk by and say hello, ask how my day is going.  I basically say the same line  - "I'm good, how are you?"  It's interaction but it's not a real connection. It's just the niceties that we all go through on a day-to-day basis.  It's the same thing when going to the grocery store or going to the gas station.  You actually are interacting with people all day every day, but there's nothing to it.  There's no real connection.  There's no meaning behind the words.  Everybody is going on living their lives and I'm doing that too.  Going about my daily life.  It just isn't as involved.  Everything seems to be a decision on what to do next.  Should I do this should, should I do that, do I want to do this, do I want to do that.  Most of time the answer is yes, I do want to get up.  I do want to do that.  The disconnect is in the mind and body connection.  I can't seem to make my body do these things, so instead I flip channels, smoke a cigarette, walk the dog, flip channels some more and sit back down.  Just do nothing.  Tell myself over and over that I need to get up, go be part of the world.  Laugh.  But I have a hard time with seeing the outside world any different than I see it just sitting in the chair watching TV.  I could be walking along a trail somewhere and I would still have the same interactions with people. Past that, there's nothing more going on.  No meaningful conversations.  No connections on a mental level. Or any other level.  So it just makes it harder for me to get up and do something other than isolate myself.

That's what I find myself working on. Trying to make myself get up out of the chair, put the remote control down, and go out and do something.  I'm  tired of only doing those kind of things like going to the group meetings, going to the Clubhouse.  Overall it's good to talk to people, express feelings, tell how your days going, how your weeks going.  But by the end of those groups, at the end of those meetings, it's back to the same life.  There's not a real connection with people even in that situation. And maybe it just takes time.  I've only been going to these things for couple of months but it would still be nice to have somebody to call on from time to time.  Just a conversation.  Meet for coffee.  Walk.  Something more than just that superficial encounter.

I guess I'm just lonely.

Feeling A Bit Lonely

I joined Twitter on December 1st of 2011.  I was a bit apprehensive at first, not know what to expect.  But I've come to enjoy it.  I've had more "conversations" and laughed more in the past month than I have in the past 6 months in the real world.  I've also found that these small interactions have helped to improve my mood on most days when I do interact with others.

The only thing that really bothers me is that no one is really close enough to maybe actually meet for coffee or something along those lines.  But I do my best not to let that really get to me.  The interaction with others that share the same feelings and same emotions actually seems to be helping.  At least, that's been my impression so far.

And that's a huge thing for me.

I do attend a local DBSA group twice a week.  I also attend a depression group once a week.  And I go to the local clubhouse 3 days a week.  That accounts for about 15 hours of out-and-about time every week.  The rest of the time though, I find myself feeling even more alone.  The time actually spent around other people and engaging in conversation seems to really remind me how much alone time I have to myself.  Forcing myself to be more social has been hard.  There's been quite a few times in the past couple of months that I've had to talk myself into getting up, getting dressed and going to these functions.  But I think it's helping.

Sense of Self

I think my biggest and longest lasting issue right now is that I have lost my sense of "self".  
I don't know who I am anymore.  I don't know what I actually feel anymore, if I feel anything at all.  I find that I don't have a true "passion" for anything, and don't know that I ever have.  


I have (perhaps "had" is the better word) friends that have professional lives.  Families.  Things that interest them that they pursue on a regular basis.  Simple things like being involved in groups that participate in pool tournaments.  Car clubs.  The types of things that people enjoy doing away from their workplace.  Things they have a passion for.


I don't seem to have that anymore.


I used to though.  


I've had long lasting jobs and what was a pretty decent career path going.  I've had hobbies.  I've had things that interested me.  But all that seems to be gone.  The past 2 years have brought me to the point of questioning everything I thought I knew about myself.  I no longer find any joy in much of anything the way I used to.


And that is what scares me the most at this point in my life.  No real feeling of joy or happiness.  No sense of direction.  No sense of purpose.  I exist on a daily basis.  Every day is the same as the last.  The daily schedule is always the same.

My First Post

So I've decided that I need to start writing down things down.

And I've decided to write them down publicly.  It's a scary thought putting all this out there for the world to see, but I'm hoping it helps more than hurts.

I feel like I have a lot to say, but I may not know how to exactly say it.  So bear with me through this as I hopefully learn how to put thoughts and feelings into words.

To get things started, I decided my first post should be a couple of things that I use to help me make it through my day.  The first is a poem by English poet William Ernest Henley (1849–1903) called "Invictus".
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.


In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.


Beyond this place of wrath and tears

It matters not how strait the gate,

Something about the last stanza really hits home with me.  I find myself repeating the last two lines to myself on a daily basis.  I'm not sure why it helps, but it does.

The second thing that sometimes help me get through my day is the words to a Baz Luhrmann song called "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)".
Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '97,
Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis or reliable then my own meandering experience.  I will dispense this advice....now.


Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, nevermind, you won't understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded, but trust me. In 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.


You are not as fat as you imagine.


Don't worry about the future, or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.  The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind: the kind that blindsides you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.


Sing.


Don't be reckless with other people's hearts; don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.


Floss.


Don't waste your time on jealousy.  Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind.  The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.


Remember compliments you receive; forget the insults. (if you succeed in doing this, tell me how).


Keep your old love letters; throw away your old bank statements.


Stretch.


Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life.  The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives; some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't.


Get plenty of Calcium.  Be kind to your knees -- you'll miss them when they're gone.


Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't.  Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't.  Maybe you'll divorce at 40; maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either.  Your choices are half chance.  So are everybody else's.


Enjoy your body: use it every way you can.  Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it; it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.


Dance...even if you have no where to do it but in your own living room.


Read the directions (even if you don't follow them).


Do not read beauty magazines; they will only make you feel ugly.


Get to know your parents; you never know when they'll be gone for good.


Be nice to your siblings: they're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.


Understand that friends come and go, but what a precious few should hold on.  Work hard to bridge the gaps and geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.


Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard.
Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.


Travel.


Accept certain inalienable truths: prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old; and when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.


Don't expect anyone else to support you.  Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when either one might run out.


Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you are 40, it will look 85.


Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.  Advice is a form of nostalgia; dispensing it is a way of wishing the past from the disposal--wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts, and recycling it for more than it's worth.


But trust me on the sunscreen.
